Breaking news is a segment of television and radio programming that interrupts current non-news programing to provide information on an urgent story, such as the death of a public figure, an ongoing natural disaster, or other event of national significance. This type of report is usually presented by a news anchor, and it may run for a few minutes or more, or even hours or days, depending on the severity of the story. This segment is often introduced by a graphic and distinctive music cue, and lower thirds and other elements are altered to convey urgency or importance. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of interruption was restricted to a few major events that required nationwide coverage and forced numerous stations to interrupt their regular broadcasts.
