Breaking news is a news story that is so urgent that it warrants interruption of non-news programs or, in the case of network television, regularly scheduled newscasts. This may require the broadcaster to alert all of its affiliate stations to “stand by” and switch to the national feed for the breaking report, which is usually announced by a distinctive newsflash or special report graphic (see below). Prior to the existence of 24-hour news networks, breaking news breaks were typically limited to major events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
