Breaking news is urgent and timely news that requires an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming, such as a national or local event such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963. The break usually starts with a countdown sequence, and is followed by an alert crawl or graphic overlay on the lower third of the screen, which includes the station identification, and possibly a distinctive music cue. This is common practice at 24-hour news networks, but was once rarer for traditional broadcasters who relied on network newscasts to interrupt regular programming in the name of breaking news.
