Breaking news is a feature of many television and radio broadcasts in which non-news or scheduled programming is interrupted by an immediate breaking story. It is more common in 24-hour news networks, where anchors are available for live interruption. Broadcasters may use the term “Newsflash” or a more formal “Special Report”, and their lower third graphics and other visual elements may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. This type of interruption is typically accompanied by an alert crawl in case any affiliate stations wish to join the network feed. Until the advent of television and radio 24-hour news channels, such breaks were limited to events that warranted nationwide coverage requiring numerous stations to interrupt programming.
