Breaking news is a report on a developing story that requires the interruption of regular non-news programming, or in the case of 24-hour news networks, regularly scheduled live newscasts. If the breaking news is serious enough to interrupt normal programming, the network feed will usually have a countdown sequence to allow affiliates time to switch to the feed and begin their own coverage. Breaking news is often introduced with a graphic, sometimes with a distinct music cue.
