Whether you are a news reporter or an audience member, you need to understand how breaking news works. A breaking news story is one that is the most important story of the moment. It can last a few minutes, several hours or even days. During this time, the network may stop all regular commercial advertising. It may also cut away to video of the breaking news event, or may cut to a live shot of the news anchor.

Breaking news is also called special coverage. When a breaking news story breaks, the network may pause for a short period of time to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. It will then switch back to the newscast when coverage is complete. The anchor will remind the audience that more information will be coming on local news.

If the breaking news event is local, the news station may cut away to a live video of the event. It will then remind viewers that the story will be continued on local news, and that the full story will be covered on the next local newscast.

When a breaking news event breaks at night, the network may pause to give local stations an opportunity to join the newsfeed. The anchor will then remind the audience that the newscast will return to the normal program schedule when the coverage ends.

If the breaking news event is local, it may cut away to a live video of a news reporter covering the event. The network may continue to show the live shot of the anchor, but it may also cut to a lower-thirds graphic with music and other sounds to emphasize the importance of the news.
