Breaking News is a term used to describe events that necessitate interruption of regular non-news programming (such as a movie, sports broadcast, or a network newscast) for live reporting. Depending on the event, it may only last for a short period of time, or could require several hours or days of continuous coverage. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were often reserved for major events that elicited nationwide coverage and required multiple stations to interrupt their programming, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or a natural disaster such as an ongoing hurricane. During these breaks, station IDs are usually overlaid on the lower third of the screen, replacing the regular station imaging promo or program reminder. The trend of breaking news has also led to the use of “Newsflash” and “Special report” tickers during scheduled programing, lessening the need for cut-ins.
