Trending is an ongoing stream of news stories that show up in media coverage and social media. Usually, these are hot topics that are causing controversy or interest.
Breaking news is a type of television and radio reporting that involves the sudden interruption of current non-news programming to provide coverage of an urgent or breaking event. A break in programming may be triggered by a dramatic event such as the assassination of a world leader, or by severe weather conditions that threaten human life or property. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were reserved for extremely critical events that warranted nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming. Breaking news reports are often accompanied by special graphics or an alert crawl, and sometimes by a distinctive music cue.
