When breaking news occurs, a network usually interrupts regular non-news programming with a special report containing the latest developments, often using graphics and a distinctive music cue to signal the interruption. Depending on the event, the break may last only a few minutes, or continue for hours or days as analysis of the story is integrated through in-studio analysts. In the past, such breaks were limited to events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which required numerous stations to interrupt their programs with a newscast. These types of breaks are less common now that 24-hour news networks have been established.
