When a news event occurs that warrants interruption of regular programming, it is referred to as Breaking News. Typically, the breaking story will be accompanied by a special graphic and a unique music cue. The news segment may be short, or it may continue for hours and days. Before 24-hour news networks became prevalent, such breaks were usually reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which required numerous stations across the country to interrupt their programs. More recently, many major network affiliates have begun to air breaking news stories during their regularly scheduled broadcasts, avoiding the need for cut-ins.
