Video Shows BBC Journalist Forcibly Detained At Covid Protest in Shanghai
During a major news event, there is usually a brief interruption to the news program. However, there are times when there are interruptions of longer duration. These interruptions are generally used to highlight the importance of the news story and to give viewers a sense of urgency.
During an interruption, the network may resume the news program or start new programming. For example, ABC’s April 2017 Shayrat missile strike interrupted a new episode of Scandal. The network also gave local stations a brief cue, so they could begin their evening newscasts.
The anchor reminds viewers that more details will be available on their local news. The network may also have an outro promo, which directs viewers to the network’s website or streaming news channel.
The anchors will also inform viewers that the local newscast will air the entire story in the near future. In addition, a graphic will be shown, with music, that highlights the importance of the breaking news. The anchor may also alter the lower thirds to indicate that there is a sense of urgency.
The coverage may be passed to the reporter at the location of the breaking event, who may share more information as it happens. The network will typically announce the news to all of its affiliates.
If the coverage is for a long time, the network may have to reschedule its programming. There may be segments not aired, or the network may suspend commercial advertising during the story.
