In 1980, Ted Turner started the Cable News Network. He quickly spawned multiple cable news channels. The channel was criticized for a lack of viewers at the start. However, the rapid adoption of cable made many critics miss the pent-up demand for alternative outlets.
Over the next decade, cable TV was able to beat broadcast news. Streaming news has caught on, as well. It allows viewers to customize their news experience.
News networks are eager for streaming to succeed. They have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations, and have high hopes for the future.
Streaming is likely to reshape political news coverage. New overtly political news operations are likely to be drawn to online video streaming, where they won’t be limited by expensive negotiations with cable companies.
Streaming makes video news ubiquitous. Viewers can watch it whenever they want. A recent study showed that streaming programming is watched more than broadcast television.
Free news streamers are also trying to lure viewers away from their cable subscriptions. Their style resembles cable’s. But they want a piece of the $3 billion profit that CNN, Fox, and MSNBC will make in 2020.
Several streaming news services have been around for a few years. Each one offers programming that is relevant to its audience. For example, BBC Newsround covers national, international, and science news, and it offers stories aimed at children.
Other notable programs include First News Talking Points, which features explainers on current issues. Also notable is Space Scoop, a site devoted to astronomy and space news. And, of course, there’s Twig Science Reporter, which is a free online primary science news service.
