Trending is a segment of the current news that talks about stories that are most popular among viewers. These are usually stories that are trending on social media and other sites. Depending on the topic, these segments may last for several minutes or up to a full hour. During these reports, regular commercial advertising is suspended to provide for uninterrupted coverage of the story. A countdown sequence is often used before the national network newscast, to allow affiliates to prepare to interrupt their programming. A similar countdown sequence is also used for the Special Report tickers on 24-hour news networks.
