Trending is a breaking news feature on many cable and satellite television channels. The show follows trends in social media and current events. It also provides analysis on the stories that are trending at the time. Breaking news usually starts with a graphic or a distinctive music cue that indicates the network is interrupting regular non-news programming or, in the case of 24-hour networks, regular scheduled newscasts. A countdown then begins to allow affiliates of the network to switch to the live feed. Alternatively, the network may run a special report during regularly scheduled programming. Historically, this was done for extremely serious events that warranted nationwide coverage and required stations to interrupt their programming.
