In the past few years, the popularity of current news programming has been steadily declining. In fact, the share of people watching cable television has fallen from 76 percent in 2015 to just 56 percent by 2021. The amount of subscription fees paid by cable TV subscribers has plummeted. Today, eighty-five percent of American households subscribe to a streaming service.

Initially, the news was reported by the town crier who walked the village bellowing the latest news. Unfortunately, the town crier was limited in his ability to reach everyone and his sources were few. A newssheet, on the other hand, was portable, sharable, and preserved for future reference. The downside of print was that it was stuck in time. In addition, radio only reported yesterday’s news, while television was able to report on today’s events. Eventually, cable TV caught up and surpassed broadcast news by offering live events.

While many cable news networks are experimenting with streaming, there are also some major players that are pursuing the new platform. While major news networks are investing hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations, many are treading carefully to avoid overhyping. For example, Fox, which owns multiple cable news channels, has attracted 1.5 million subscribers with its streaming app, while NBC News Now produces more than 30 hours of programming a month.

Another advantage of streaming is that it makes building news libraries more affordable. Furthermore, with streaming, it is possible to archive news and view it anywhere. This makes video news ubiquitous.
