In television and radio broadcasting, breaking news is a segment of a program that interrupts other non-news or, in some cases, regularly scheduled programing to cover urgently developing events. The breaking news segment begins with a countdown sequence or a graphic that informs viewers that the network’s regular programming will be interrupted, and then the network feed cuts to a special open, often accompanied by a distinct music cue. This is in contrast to breaking news events prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, which normally aired such reports through cut-ins or alert crawls during regular programs. Newsflash and Special report are other terms used to describe such segments.
