The news on TV has been around for a long time, but new streaming technologies are reshaping the medium. For one thing, they’re making video news ubiquitous. And for another, they’re giving viewers the power to personalize their experience.
In the beginning, critics complained about the lack of viewers for CNN’s streaming efforts. But the network tapped into an underserved market, spawned its own cable news channel, and repurposed programming from its broadcast operations.
Streaming has also allowed news networks to archive content and deliver it on demand. Moreover, it has made building news libraries cost-effective. So much so, that these three networks earned a combined profit of $3 billion in 2020.
Streaming has even proven to attract a mass audience. Despite the fact that many people don’t want to pay for television, they’re willing to subscribe to streaming services.
One way that online video is likely to change the news game is by attracting new overtly political news operations. This could encourage voters to further sink into political silos.
One example of this is Fox Nation, the network’s free streaming app. It’s already attracted 1.5 million subscribers.
Another example is news on Facebook. According to a recent survey, 37 percent of Americans consider themselves “in the loop” with current events. However, a surprising number of consumers do not believe any stories they hear in the media.
Several streaming networks have tried to repurpose programming from cable for their own streaming audiences. While these strategies have been effective at attracting viewers, they’ve also been unsuccessful.
