Breaking news is a term used for television or radio coverage of news events that are so urgent, or that elicit nationwide concern, that they require an immediate interruption in non-news programming or regular ongoing newscasts, usually to include an anchor on location reporting live from the scene. Often, lower third graphics and other graphic elements will be altered to convey the sense of urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were limited to major news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or severe weather emergencies, which might prompt the use of a special alert crawl on the regular programming.
