Streaming TV news has proven to be a viable alternative to broadcast TV. This is because streaming news is accessible wherever the viewer goes. It resembles the look and style of conventional TV, but allows viewers to select what they want to watch.

Online video is likely to disrupt political coverage and create new overtly political news operations. With a growing number of new options, the audience may become more polarized.

News networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the streaming business. They have done this with high hopes. However, many newscasters see their audiences slipping away. As a result, these operators avoid over-hyping their services. Rather, they try to make it clear that they are offering something worthwhile to the consuming public.

For ten years, the major streaming networks have been repurposing programming from broadcast TV. They offer documentaries, reruns, and analysis. They also schedule regular nightly news programs.

In 2020, CNN, Fox, and MSNBC each earned a combined profit of $3 billion. Those profits come from the revenue generated by cable subscribers.

When the three cable news operators first launched their own free streaming services, critics dismissed their ability to attract viewers. But that didn’t stop them from entering the business. The news networks recognized that streaming would give them a technological advantage.

While cable TV news has been successful in the past, it had to face the reality of a declining audience. Moreover, the news networks realized that their audience might be willing to pay for news content.
