Streaming news is a technology that enables audiences to watch current news and other programming wherever they are. It reduces the scarcity of media content. Streaming also enables news networks to archive content for future viewing. This allows newscasters to serve a more customized experience.

Streaming news has proven to be a draw for niche audiences and a mass audience. It also makes building a news library inexpensive. Newscasters have noticed that audiences are fading away. This creates an opportunity to revive the local news ecosystem. By increasing the volume of local stories, streamers can expand geographic coverage.

In the past, newscasts have been limited to reporting the news that was urgent. As new technologies developed, however, the ability to stream and archive news allowed networks to serve an audience that could watch anywhere. Streaming news also eliminated the need to negotiate costly contracts with cable companies.

In the 1980s, Ted Turner founded the Cable News Network (CNN), a 24-hour news channel. Critics argued that CNN was ineffective because of its lack of viewers at the beginning. However, CNN spawned MSNBC and the Fox News Channel. It also avoided entering the free news streamer market. It’s now the largest news operation in the United States.

Cable TV news one-upped broadcast news by offering live events. The earliest examples of breaking news interruptions were the John F. Kennedy assassination and the September 11 attacks.

In addition to newscasts, cable TV also offered special programs. A “special report” refers to a program that is designed for true crime, crime investigation, or political affairs. This program is usually hosted by a reporter. The report is usually accompanied by an internal alert service, which disseminates the information to the network’s affiliates.
