Trending is a breaking news story that is popular or is being talked about by many people. If a news event is breaking and warrants interruption of regular programming, the network will usually alert its affiliates to be on standby and will begin a countdown sequence until the network feed is ready to come in. A distinctive graphic, often with a recognizable music cue, is then displayed to indicate an upcoming break in regular programming. This type of breaking news is often called a Newsflash or Special Report. Prior to the existence of 24-hour news networks, these interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage requiring many stations to interrupt their normal programming.
