Current News is a term used to describe stories that are being covered or reported on by a broadcaster. It is often used for current issues and events that warrant the interruption of scheduled programming in order to report their details. The term is also used for certain other forms of news and events, such as a severe weather event that warrants extended coverage or the latest episode of a popular television series.

Breaking news

On the broadcast side, a breaking news story is most likely to break during a live feed from a network (or an affiliate) and be introduced by a special reporter, or at least a news anchor. Typically, this type of coverage is interrupted during the middle of a network’s newscast and paused until all affiliate stations have joined in (often via an internal alert service from the master control).

The most common form of coverage involves a short jingle featuring a graphic and the phrase “breaking news”, followed by a brief news anchor introduction. Depending on the story being covered, this may be accompanied by a live shot or clips from an interview with someone at the scene of the incident.

In some cases, the story is even passed on to a reporter who is at the scene of the incident or has access to the same information as the anchor, and will often share it with viewers in a special segment dubbed a “special report”. This is more common on the cable side than on radio or television.
