Current News, also referred to as breaking news, is a format of reporting which interrupts pre-scheduled programming for an event or series of events of note. It can be a brief report – sometimes a few minutes long, or a full hour if the story is sustained – or may last for days at a time (e.g., for the September 11, 2001 attacks).
Breaking news on television is usually accomplished with a countdown or a reverse countdown (often called an alert crawl) from the network feed. This is usually followed by an opening graphic, often with music, that conveys the importance of the event.
In addition, an internal alert/message service is used by the broadcaster to send the message to its affiliate stations, as well as a cue from its talent to pause the program and reset coverage. Local stations sometimes take over for their evening newscasts, as they have a larger audience and are more likely to have access to information about the event.
Depending on the size and scope of the breaking news event, it may be the subject of a short telecast or long form report which is then passed on to news anchors at the scene for more in-depth coverage. In addition, if the story is a local one and the event is of national interest, a live feed of the news may be shown to a worldwide audience, via satellite or the internet, in real-time.
