The term “breaking news” is commonly used in broadcast journalism to describe a current event that warrants interruption of regular programming (in the case of television, this usually means a network or local station newscast) or continuous coverage, in order to relay the most important details first. This is especially true of breaking news involving international events, such as wars or natural disasters.
A common format for such news events on television includes a countdown of a few seconds, followed by an opening graphic and voiceover announcing the cut-in, and information disseminated from an internal alert service used by a master control. The network may then switch back to the current program feed, or begin new programming if the story is too big for the network newscast to cover in its entirety.
A breaking news story is an important and interesting event that warrants attention. It may be a large national or global news event, such as a terrorist attack, natural disaster, political scandal, or war, or a locally-related event that has immediate impact on the community. A breaking news story is also a good example of the power of the media, in that it can provide insight into current issues and help people make informed decisions about their own lives.
