A breaking news report is a television or radio broadcast during which the current non-news program is interrupted to cover a story that is developing rapidly and may require immediate coverage, such as a natural disaster or a terrorist attack. The interrupt may consist of a simple cut-in with a network feed, or the network might begin its normal non-news broadcast with a special countdown sequence to allow affiliates to join the breaking news reporting. It is a common practice on 24-hour news networks, which have an anchor available for live interruption of programming at any time. “Newsflash” and “Special report” are similar terms for this type of reporting.
