A typical day in the life of a network newscast starts with a network cue and the opening graphic of the newscast. The broadcaster sends an internal alert to its affiliates, which are then notified and the network feed switches to reverse countdown. Usually, the countdown begins at five seconds. However, local stations typically do not offer reverse countdowns, but these are available if necessary. The network may then begin their regular daytime or evening programming, and the local stations will continue on an “extended edition.”

The Bentley Library provides a guide to current news in the Library. The list includes news published over the past year. Users can sort articles by column headings, and there’s also a tab for “Archived News” to see news from two years ago. The Guide is designed with the Bentley University community in mind. Here, students and faculty can find the latest news on a variety of topics. However, current news may also be available in print.

Breaking news is often referred to as the most important story of the moment. For example, the North Korea crisis of 2017-18 is a prime example. While the term “breaking news” has a specific meaning in the television industry, 24-hour news channels have diluted its meaning. They now fill their time by filling it with commentary. Therefore, the term is redundant. Nonetheless, the term “breaking news” is used to describe any story that is current and of general interest to viewers.
