Streaming news has changed the media landscape. News networks have sensed a technological advantage in serving streaming audiences, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars of investment.
Streaming news has been a boon to niche audiences, as well as mass audiences. Unlike broadcast news, streaming allows viewers to customize their experience, delivering timely news wherever they are. This makes it cost effective for networks to archive content and provide timely news to consumers.
Major streaming networks, such as NBC News Now, boast of 31 million hours of programming a month. In addition to nightly news programs, they offer documentaries and news analysis. In addition to their own programming, they repurpose programming from cable.
As online video streaming begins to reshape political news coverage, new overtly political news operations, such as Fox News Channel and One America News, are likely to emerge. Meanwhile, newcomers to streaming news, such as Newsy, have planted a flag in the streaming frontier.
In the meantime, news networks are implementing aggressive local streaming news strategies. CBS, for instance, plans to beam 45,000 hours of local news in 2022. In addition, they have already nichified coverage by acquiring local news from stations owned by CBS.
For decades, cable news was a profitable business. But as viewers increasingly opted for entertainment over news, it became more difficult for networks to deliver siloing results similar to cable. With the advent of DVRs, time-shifting was possible, allowing viewers to watch the news in its entirety without interruption.
