Trending is a feature of Current News that shows stories that are currently popular in the news. This is often used by networks to increase the exposure of new stories on their network, or to show popular trends on their online news websites. In the days before 24-hour cable and satellite news channels, breaking news events were generally limited to severe weather or highly threatening incidents such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which would compel stations to interrupt regular programming and break into live coverage. This typically begins with a countdown graphic, followed by a special opening sequence and an anchor covering the event in real-time.
