Breaking news is a term used to refer to events that are breaking, or have just broken, in the world of journalism. When such an event occurs, it interrupts current non-news programming (or, in the case of network television or radio, regular scheduled newscasts) with a special graphic and music cue that indicates that there is an important story to cover immediately. Depending on the significance of the story, it may also override lower thirds and other graphics to convey urgency. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were usually reserved for major stories of national importance like the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
