Breaking News is the term used to refer to an event or series of events that are of such immediate significance that they warrant interrupting non-news programming to broadcast an ongoing live report. Often, such reports are followed by further analysis and information. These reports are often presented by a single anchor for a network, though if the event is severe enough, it may require multiple analysts to provide live coverage. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were typically reserved for extreme emergency situations such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which necessitated nationwide interruptions of television and radio programs. Occasionally, breaking news may also trigger a special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker to be placed over the lower third of the screen during regular programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
