Trending

The term “trending” refers to stories that are currently of particular interest to media and public audiences. These stories may be breaking news, current events or popular culture phenomena. Trending is an integral part of the news and television industry, often reflected in programming and advertising. The concept of trending is also prominent in social networking, and is a key aspect of the viral marketing strategy used by many companies.

Breaking news is a term used by broadcasters for a story that interrupts regular non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, a previously scheduled program) and which requires an immediate response. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, this type of coverage was reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. In modern times, a network will usually interrupt its own scheduled newscast and begin an alert crawl for any stations that wish to join the breaking news feed.
