Breaking news is a news event that warrants interruption of non-news programming, or in some cases, a network’s regular newscast. The breaking story is usually preceded by a countdown sequence and an opening graphic, with a distinctive music cue to convey urgency. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent stories like the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their regular programming.
