When a news event happens that requires the interruption of current non-news programming or, in the case of national network newscasts, a network feed, the network will usually alert all its affiliates to stand by for a “Newsflash” or “Special Report.” After a countdown sequence is used, the newscast will pause briefly so that affiliates can switch over to the news feed and begin their own local coverage. If the story warrants prolonged coverage, the newscast may halt regular commercial advertising for extended periods of time. Lower thirds and other graphics can also be altered to convey a sense of urgency during breaking stories.
