Breaking news is a television or radio event that elicits such urgency, especially with regard to severe weather events, that it requires an interruption of currently non-news programing. If the news event is national in scope, broadcasters will usually use a countdown sequence to let affiliated stations know that their feed is being interrupted and to “stand by”. A breaking news graphic or alert crawl then appears on the screen, often accompanied by an appropriate newsflash or special report style music cue. The use of these graphics reduces the need for cut-ins during regularly scheduled programming.
