Trending is a breaking news story, usually with video footage, that is being followed by television and radio networks. Often, the network will interrupt current non-news programming or regular scheduled newscasts to provide live coverage of the breaking event. This type of break in programming is often referred to as a newsflash, special report, or a ticker. In the past, such breaks were reserved for national events that required urgent nationwide coverage (such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy). In more recent times, 24-hour news networks have made breaking news a permanent part of their broadcast schedule and no longer require local stations to interrupt other regular programs for special reports.
