When a breaking news event warrants nationwide coverage and requires interrupting regular programming to provide the report, it is referred to as a “newsflash” or a “special report.” If a national network broadcast is currently in progress, the station will alert its affiliates to be prepared for an immediate interruption, and usually pause the feed to allow affiliated stations to join. Often the newscast will then relaunch with the opening graphic and distinctive music cue, followed by an anchor who introduces the story at hand.
