Breaking news is urgent news that warrants the interruption of non-news programming, or in the case of national network broadcasters, a pause in the currently running newscast so that other affiliated stations can switch to the network feed. It is usually signalled by an animated graphic or distinctive music cue, and may be preceded by a countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to join the network feed in time for breaking coverage. Depending on the nature of the breaking news, a news anchor may then welcome viewers to the report and begin coverage. “Newsflash” and “Special report” are alternative terms for breaking news.
