When an event happens that warrants interruption of regular non-news programming, a network will typically alert its affiliate stations to stand by for the newscast to be interrupted, and then announce a “Newsflash” or “Special report” with distinctive music cues. After the newsflash or special report, a news anchor will appear in-studio and introduce the story at hand. Depending on the nature of the story, it may last only a few minutes or may continue for hours and days of coverage. During this time, lower thirds and other graphics are often altered to convey a sense of urgency.
