Breaking News
When a serious breaking news event occurs, television or radio networks will interrupt regularly scheduled programming to report on the event. This type of news coverage is commonly known as a “newsflash” or special report, and until the rise of 24-hour cable news channels, was reserved for events that demanded nationwide broadcast interruptions such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or severe weather incidents that threaten public safety. The network will often use a countdown sequence for affiliates to join the breaking news report, and may alter their lower third graphics for urgency.
