Breaking news is the name given to a breaking story that requires immediate attention and coverage. This type of event usually warrants an interruption of regular non-news programming, but may also require a cut-in during a regularly scheduled newscast or weather forecast. If the event is sufficiently serious, networks typically alert their affiliates with a special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphic and a countdown sequence to allow them to switch over to the network feed.
