Until 24-hour news networks became commonplace, most television and radio stations only interrupted regular programming for breaking news events that commanded widespread coverage and required immediate attention, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Typically, a network will alert its affiliates through station imaging or a countdown sequence, to ask them to stand by for the breaking news report. The network feed then pauses, and an opening graphic is displayed with a distinctive music cue, followed by the news anchor. Occasionally, lower thirds and other graphics are altered to add urgency to the report. This report is sometimes known as a newsflash or special report.
