Current News is a term used to refer to news events of significant importance that warrant interrupting non-news programming (or, in some cases, regular network news broadcasts). Such interruptions are commonly seen on 24-hour news networks and were once limited to events that required nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which prompted many stations to break into regular programming and use cut-ins and alert crawls.
Josh Owens is out with a book about his time working for Infowars host Alex Jones. He joins “The Takeout” to talk about it.
A breaking-news story may only last for a few minutes, or it may continue for hours or even days. When this happens, network affiliates must insert their station identification into the top of the hour over the special report’s music cue.
