Trending is the weekly news feature that talks about current events making headlines. It is a key component of the NPR Daily newscast and is heard at the top of the hour.

When breaking news occurs, the network will alert all of its affiliate stations to interrupt their own non-news programming (and in the case of a national newscast, pause the program), then begin broadcasting a special “Newsflash” or “Special Report.” During this segment, the station imaging promo and other program reminders are overlaid with the new story. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, these interruptions were rare, and generally limited to severe events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or a large natural disaster.

March 19, 2026: Several states pass laws introducing proof-of-citizenship requirements to vote. NPR’s Mark Memmott talks about what this means. Plus, we explore how drones are reshaping warfare. They’re cheap to produce, can travel long distances and strike with precision.
