When an event occurs that is considered breaking news, stations interrupt regularly scheduled programming to broadcast a special report or special edition of the regular nightly newscast. This interruption may only last for a few minutes, or continue for multiple hours or days depending on the severity of the event. A distinctive opening graphic and music cue are used to signal the break in programming, and station identification is provided at the top of the hour overlaid on the breaking news coverage.
