Trending is a segment that follows current stories making headlines in the news. Depending on the nature of the story, it can last just a few minutes or span multiple hours or days. During Trending, the network interrupts current non-news programming (or, in the case of 24-hour news channels, their regularly scheduled newscasts) to run the report. Network affiliates may be required to insert their station identification at the top of the hour overlaid on the report. In addition, some networks also use a special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker graphic and/or distinctive music cue to indicate that an urgent event is underway.
