When an event occurs that warrants breaking news coverage, a network may interrupt its regular programming (or in the case of radio, current non-news programming) to broadcast a special report. The story is usually presented by a journalist, and in some cases may be accompanied by video footage. Depending on the severity of the incident, lower thirds may be altered to convey the urgency of the situation, and station imaging promos may be suspended for sustained coverage. This type of event often necessitates an interruption for the duration of the special report, which can be a few minutes or longer. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interrupts were restricted to very important events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, for which a live cut-in was used.
