When a major event happens that elicits nationwide coverage and requires an interruption of current non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts), a network will usually alert all of its affiliates to stand by for a brief newsflash or Special Report, which features a distinctive music cue and lower thirds designed to convey urgency. Depending on the nature of the story, these break-ins may be brief, or they may last hours or even days. This type of reporting is also common on 24-hour news channels, which always have an anchor available for live interruptions to follow breaking stories.
