LIVE: Trump hosts 2026 National Football Champion Indiana Hoosiers | NBC News

When an event occurs that warrants interruption of non-news programming, or occasionally, regularly scheduled network newscasts, a “breaking news” alert is issued. The network will usually tell its affiliates to “stand by” or pause the current newscast, then begin counting down for the breaking news announcement. This will be accompanied by an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. Sometimes, the report may be a short newsflash, or it could last for hours or days as the story develops. In the past, before 24-hour news networks existed, such programming breaks were primarily used for national events that required a large number of stations to interrupt their regular schedules.
