Trending

“Trending” is a term used by television and radio stations to describe stories that are getting a lot of attention, or have recently been the focus of significant coverage in the media. This may be due to the newsworthiness of a topic, the public’s interest in a particular subject, or because it has triggered a reaction from the government, the general population or the political landscape. This type of coverage is often accompanied by a ticker at the top of the hour and an alert on lower thirds, both of which signal to viewers that they should pay attention.

Breaking news is an event that occurs during non-news programming that warrants immediate, urgent coverage and interrupts other scheduled network broadcasts. It typically involves a countdown sequence from the national network to allow local affiliates to switch over and start airing a special report. Depending on the severity of the situation, it can last a few minutes or for several hours or days. Breaking news is particularly common on 24-hour news networks, which are equipped to interrupt their regularly scheduled programming at any time.
