When a news event occurs that warrants an immediate interruption of non-news programming or, in the case of network television, a pause of the ongoing newscast to allow affiliate stations to join a national feed, it is known as breaking news. A countdown sequence is usually used to give affiliated stations time to prepare to join the news feed, and is often accompanied by a special graphics open that features a distinctive music cue. Breaking news reports can also be called Newsflash or Special Report. Breaking news events that would previously have required a cut-in during regular programming are now generally covered in real time on 24-hour news networks.
